2012 House Blessings

The central sign of God's sanctification of all things through the feast of Theophany is the act of blessing the homes of faithful Christians. Father Gregory visits all members of the Church to pray with them in the place where they live, and to bless their surroundings with Holy Water. He asks God to have mercy on the house, to rid it of every evil and to fill it with every blessing. The blessing of homes is a custom of special beauty and significance.
We ask Christ to bless and enter into our homes and our lives. We ask Him to be with us, as we desire to be with Him. We ask that by the sprinkling of blessed water, the Holy Spirit renew us, our families and our lives in our homes.
With Love In Christ,
Father Gregory

2/5/12 - National Scout Sunday

On Sunday, February 5, 2012, Scouts all over the United States will celebrate National Scout Sunday. This Sunday is set aside to honor God and to remind us that we are all His Creatures and made in His Image or more precisely, to image (reflect) Him to the world. The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the Americas has designated this also as Orthodox Scout Sunday. Through the Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting, the Assembly and its predecessor, SCOBA, have been actively supporting both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the USA since the 196o's.

Orthodox Scouts may earn one of three age-appropriate religious awards: Saint George for the youngest scouts, Chi-Rho for the "middle years", and Alpha-Omega for the older scouts. The awards require progressively more challenging work including service projects.

Scouts will wear their uniforms to church, a very visible sign that they are members of the scouting organization but just as important, members of their parish. As Orthodox Christians, we should honor our Boy or Girl Scouts and what they represent.

UPDATE - Adult Education Schedule

Greetings in the Lord,

Dear Friends -
A brief note to follow up on our Adult Ed schedule.
On Sunday, December 4, Martha Elliott will present a series of four sessions on Saint Maximus the Confessor, drawing upon her doctoral research for the Doctor of Ministry degree at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary -- this will be an exciting and edifying series of discussions for us all. A big thank you in advance to Martha for sharing her work with us. FYI, Martha will make copies of materials available to the class to those who want to read further on the topic.

Looking ahead to the New Year, once the series on Saint Maximus concludes in mid-January, we will move into the next phase in our discussion of Orthodox Christian social ethics, which is bioethics.

For those wishing to read ahead, a recommended text is Fr John Breck, The Sacred Gift of Life: Orthodox Christianity and Bioethics, 1999 (available from St. Vladimir's).

Your servant in Christ,
-Charles.

We look forward to the coming year and to the doors God is opening for the sharing of the Gospel.
