Four Evangelists Orthodox Mission

The History of Four Evangelists Orthodox Mission

Our Seventh Year (2008)
This year, in an effort to discover a more efficient manner to provide assistance to our parishioners in need than the Let’s Dish program, the Parish Council has established a Parishioner Food Pantry Fund. A Collection Basket for this purpose will be placed near the food/coffee line during Coffee Hour, so that donations may be made every Sunday.

We also had our 3rd Annual Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday, February 3rd. Monetary donations went to St. Andrew’s Society, a group that, among other charitable works, supports several Soup Kitchens in Ukraine and the food items were contributed to a local, Harford County food pantry.

Our Archpastor, Vladyka Antony, served the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy here at Four Evangelists’ on Palm Sunday, April 20. Visiting with him was Bishop-Elect Daniel, as well as several seminarians. At right, the clergy pose with our growing parish family.

The Sixth Year (2007)
As we entered our sixth year, we still use the facilities at St John School. Our building fund, going into the new year is $12,525.00. At our annual parish meeting, Greg Herbert, Lia Krowzow and Tammy Herbert were elected our new Parish Council Officers. In March we were blessed with a visit from our Archpastor, Archbishop Antony. It is always a joy for us when Vladyka is here.

Anna and Zorina Eckman made their First Confessions on July 1.

Family and friends joined our parish family at our Fifth Anniversary Celebration on October 21. The banquet was held at the Clarion Ballroom in Aberdeen. We were blessed to have so many parishioners, their families and our extended parish family visit us that afternoon. Rev. Father Volodymyr Steliac, and several members from St. Andrews Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Silver Spring, joined us. Rev. Father Gregory Matthewes-Green, of Holy Cross Antiochian Orthodox Church in Linthicum, was present. Rev. Father John Parsells, Matushka Emily and their beautiful daughter Elizabeth joined us for the afternoon as well. Father Parsells is the the pastor at Christ the Savior Orthodox Church in Fenwick Island, Delaware.

The Fifth Year (2006)
In March we welcomed a new little one into the parish fold with the Churching of Michelle & Bryan Norton. Bryan was baptized on June 17, a Saturday. His godparents are Greg and Tammy Herbert. Bryan's big sister, Kaitlin, received her First Confessions the next day. Sophia Czumak also received her Confession then.

In the fall, we were blessed with another innocent. Michael Parker, son of Megan and David, entered into the Holy Orthodox Church through the Mysteries of Baptism and Chrismation on Sunday, November 12th. The Service took place at Holy Cross AOC, in Linthicum. Fr. Gregory concelebrated with Fr. Gregory Mathewes-Green (Megan's father) of Holy Cross.

The Fourth Year (2005)
In February we held our Annual Parish Meeting. Our newly elected Parish Council consists of: Parish Council President – Rdr. Basil Athas; Secretary – Lia Krowzow; and Treasurer – Greg Herbert.

Parishioners Virginia Gosnell and Rdr. Basil Athas entered together into the Mystery of Holy Matrimony on Saturday, June 18, 2005. This was our first wedding here at Four Evangelists!

Priestmonk Daniel (Zelinskyy) concelebrating the Divine Liturgy with Fr. Gregory Sunday, November 13th. After Liturgy, he gave a presentation on the Mission trip that he led this past Summer to the two orphanages in Ukraine that our Archdiocese has adopted, where many of the children affected by the Chornobyl nuclear disaster live.

The Third Year (2004)
On Palm Sunday 2004, we welcomed Glenn (Symeon) Eckman, newly baptized and chrismated, fully into our Parish Family. This was our first adult baptism! His godfather is Reader Basil Athas. May God grant them many many years! On July 11, 2004, we welcomed Ann Kietzman into the Holy Orthodox Church through the Mystery of Chrismation. May God grant her many many years!

At a Special Parish Meeting held April 25, our Parish Constitution was ratified by unanimous vote, and Jeanne Eckman was elected as a delegate from our Parish to the Tri-annual Archdiocesan Sobor being held this October. The Sobor is held in South Bound Brook, NJ.

Matthew James Czumak (born May 26) was baptized on August 29, 2004 by Archbishop Antony! His cousin, Jason Czumak, was also churched that morning! Father Gregory was the celebrant for the churching. May God grant them, their parents and Matthew's godparents many many years!

Fr. Robert Holet, pastor of St. Nicholas Orthodox Mission in Charlottesville, VA, joined us here at 4 Evangelists Sunday, November 14th. He gave a seminar on Stewardship, particularly in the context of a Mission Parish, during Coffee Hour.

St. Nicholas is among the favorites of the Orthodox Church. The children especially love him. For St. Nicholas Day 2004, the children performed the Nativity Play for both our parishioners and for the residents at a local nursing home. St. Nicholas made a special visit to our children as well.

Our Second Year (2003)
The men of the Mission held their first Brotherhood Meeting on March 1, 2003. Our parish held its first Lenten Retreat on Saturday, March 15, 2003. Father Deacon Joe Kreta, Director of Religious Education for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, was the guest speaker. It was a very spiritually uplifting retreat.

We are blessed to have so many who wish to see the Mission succeed. The members of the Sisterhood of Holy Cross AOC have embroidered a Plashchanitsa (Epitaphion), to be given to our Parish as a gift. The presentation took place at the Vespers Service, served at Holy Cross, on Tuesday, April 15th, 2003. May God grant them many many years!

On Pentecost of June 2003, Anna Hosey and Nicholas Czumak made their First Confessions. At a Special Parish Meeting held in June, the Parish voted to give the Parish Board the authority to both pursue the rental of another site that will be exclusively our own, with enough space for both a temple and a parish hall, and to obtain a loan to cover the required cost of building out the rental space and bringing it to code.

In July, we began an annual outing to the Ironbirds game. In August, we also held our First Annual Parish Picnic at a local swim club after the Divine Liturgy.

Our Archpastor, his Eminence Archbishop Antony, made his first official visit to our parish on Sunday, December 21, 2003, celebrating a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. During His Eminence's visit, Basil Athas was tonsured at the hands of the Archbishop to the rank of Reader.

Fr. Gregory Mathewes-Green, pastor of Holy Cross AOC, addressed our Parish on Saturday, November 22. The topic will be “Lessons that I Learned in Building a Mission”.

That First Year (2002)
A need was acknowledged for an organized Orthodox Church in the Harford County area of Maryland. After many hours of prayer, meditation and talks with our Archbishop Antony, Father Gregory Czumak accepted the honor and the task of starting a Mission (a new parish) in this area.  The First Sunday Liturgy here was celebrated on September 8, 2002 at John Carroll School.

The first Parish Board of Trustees was elected at the October Parish Meeting. Our new Officers are: Chairman- Alexander Krowzow; Treasurer- Andrew Hosey; Secretary- Vincent McKee. In addition, Matthew Groh was appointed as our new Youth Minister.

Our parish joined two others to visit with the His Eminence, the Archbishop Antony, at South Bound Brook on Saturday, November 16, 2002. Despite the sometimes incredibly heavy rains going there and back, the rain held a little break each time we walked around outside! His Eminence gave a tour of the Museum, the Library and spoke a little of the history behind South Bound Brook. Father Daniel gave a tour of the Mausoleum, Saint Andrews Memorial Church and the Seminary, which Father Gregory himself had attended. Attending from our Mission were the Czumak Family, the Krowzow Family, and Matthew Groh.

In December of 2002, we welcomed our first catechumen into our parish family. Scott Vincent Woods entered the Holy Orthodox Church through the Mystery of Chrismation on Sunday, December 22nd. That same month, two of our youth -- Gabrielle Walsh and Samuel Hosey -- received their First Holy Confession.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO PRAY for our Mission Parish Community every day, that, by the grace of God, His Church may grow and become fully established, for the sanctification and salvation of souls, and that He may be worshipped and glorified in an Orthodox manner here in Northern Maryland.
